The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), the umbrella body of farmers that spearheaded the 2020-21 farmers’ agitation, on Thursday (January 9, 2024) passed a ‘unity resolution’ considering the enormity of the farmers’ demands in Punjab’s Moga.
At its ‘Mahapanchayat’, the SKM resolved to reject the National Policy Framework on Agriculture Marketing and demanded formulation of a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) based on the Swaminathan report, and debt waiver for all farmers and workers, etc.
“A unity resolution was passed considering the enormity of the farmers’ demands,” said an official Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KKM) statement, urging farmers’ unions to unite to challenge the Union government. A six-member unity committee of SKM will go to Khanauri and Shambhu – the inter-State boundaries between Haryana and Punjab, under the banner of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) have been protesting since February 13, 2024.
As farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s fast unto death continued, the SKM accused the Centre of being responsible for the present impasse and the deteriorating health condition of Mr. Dallewal. They appealed to the Union government to hold talks with the organisations.
The SKM gave a call for burning it’s copies of the draft of National Policy Framework on Agriculture Marketing on January 13, and announced to take ‘tractor march’ on January 26 in Punjab.
