The Supreme Court on Friday (December 13, 2024) granted conditional future bail to former West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee in money laundering case related to cash-for-job scam.
The former West Bengal minister will be released on February 1, subject to trial court framing charges.
The court order stated that Mr. Chatterjee should not hold any public office upon his release but can continue as an MLA.
Mr. Chatterjee was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on July 23, 2022 and has been an undertrial in a money laundering case linked to an alleged job-for-cash scam.
The Enforcement Directorate has been probing alleged irregularities in recruitment to the West Bengal School Service Commission, but it yet to frame charges. The case pertains to alleged irregularities in the recruitment of Group C & D staff, assistant teachers of classes IX-XII and primary teachers, involved handing out appointments in exchange for money while depriving candidates who had qualified in the recruitment process of a job.
