The 76th Republic Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm in Rajasthan on Sunday (January 26, 2025), with the State-level function being held at Maharana Bhupal Stadium in Udaipur. Governor Haribhau Bagade unfurled the tricolour and called upon people to fulfil their responsibilities to help in the all-round development of the State and the nation.

Three distinguished persons from the State — Begum Batool, Baijnath Maharaj, and Sheen Kaaf Nizam — have been conferred with the Padma Shri award this year in recognition of their contributions to art, spirituality, and literature.

Mr. Bagade inspected the Republic Day parade after the rendition of the national anthem. Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, his Cabinet colleagues, and a battery of political leaders attended the event.

Addressing the function, Mr. Bagade praised the State government and said it had lived up to the people’s expectations during the last year. “A large number of welfare schemes have been launched in various fields in Rajasthan, and the resolution for development is being implemented on the ground,” he said.

Example of progress

The Governor laid emphasis on the significance of Republic Day as an occasion to remember those who drafted the Constitution and paved the way for nation building. “As the largest democracy in the world, we are proud of our successes achieved despite the serious challenges faced by the country over the last 75 years.” Mr. Bagade said.

Mr. Bagade said India had set an example of progress by following the path shown by the Constitution and evolved a strong democratic system, which was being emulated by other countries as well.

The Governor awarded the President’s Police Medal to Indian Police Service (IPS) officers Sachin Mittal and S. Sengathir, along with other officers and personnel, for their outstanding performance. The event also featured cultural performances.

Republic Day functions were held in schools and other institutions across the State. Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani unfurled the national flag at the Assembly, while similar functions were held at the Rajasthan High Court, State Secretariat, State Police Headquarters, and the Nehru Sahakar Bhavan in Jaipur.

Begum Batool is an accomplished Maand and Bhajan folk singer and has taken Rajasthani folk music to the global stage, having performed in France, Spain, and Italy. Baijnath Maharaj, president of Shraddhanath Maharaj Ashram in Sikar, is recognised for his contributions to spirituality and interfaith dialogue.

Sheen Kaaf Nizam, whose real name is Shiv Kishan Bissa, is a celebrated Urdu poet and literary scholar hailing from Jodhpur. His poetry collections are popular among Urdu readers. One of his books won the prestigious Sahitya Akademi award in 2010.
