VCK founder Thol. Thirumavalavan has expressed concerns over the violence that unfolded at Sambhal in Uttar Pradesh after a second survey was carried out at Jama Masjid on November 24 to find out if the structure was built over an ancient temple.
The Chidambaram MP urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to protect minorities, and uphold the Places of Worship Act, 1991. In a letter to Mr. Shah, Mr. Thirumavalavan said all activities at the mosque should be stopped to prevent escalation of violence.
“Have adequate security measures in place to safeguard the lives and properties of the minority in Sambhal. Conduct an independent inquiry to investigate the incidents of November 24, particularly the allegations of police firing,” he said.
He further said that the Centre should issue a public statement reaffirming it commitment to upholding the Places of Worship Act, and prevent attempts to disturb the communal harmony of the nation.
“Built in 1528 in Emperor Babur’s reign, the mosque is a protected national monument. Any attempt to alter its character undermines its historical and cultural significance,” Mr. Thirumavalavan said.
