Police Flag Day – marking the reorganisation of the police force and enacting of the Karnataka Police Act, 1963, which came into force on April 2, 1965 – was celebrated in the city on Wednesday.

It is also held to pay tribute to the sacrifices and services of the police in maintaining law and order. The main event was at the City Armed Reserve grounds and retired officer Puttamadaiah called upon the new recruits to be abreast with latest developments in science and technology, and upskill to crack cybercrimes that were on the rise.

He also highlighted the evolution of the Police Flag Day, stating that after the unification, the then Mysore State had different police flags and it was modified and adopted after the enactment of the Karnataka Police Act. He pointed out that this had also led to the establishment of a welfare fund for retired police personnel.

Mr. Puttamadaiah said the functioning of the Police Department differs from other departments as it did not have any fixed working hours. Hence, health issues were a major area of concern and it was essential to be aware of the same.

On the situation in the country today, Mr. Puttamadaiah highlighted there was an increase in political unrest and cybercrimes and young officers should equip themselves to handle such issues effectively.

Assistant Commander M. Raju led the parade and 10 contingents, including the City and District Armed Reserve Force, City Civil Police, Traffic Police, and Mounted Police, took part. Retired police personnel were also felicitated on the occasion.

The Police Flag Day event was attended by IGP (Southern Range) Boralingayya, Mysuru City Police Commissioner Seema Latkar, District Superintendent of Police N. Vishnuvardhan, City, Additional SP Nagesh, Commandant Shailendra, KPA Director Channabasavanna, and other senior officials.
