Passenger train skips Papanasam stop, inquiry ordered

The Tiruchi Railway Division has initiated an inquiry into reports of a Tiruchi-bound passenger (16833) from Mayiladuthurai Junction skipping the stop at Papanasam railway station on Saturday.

Travellers waiting at the Papanasam station and those on board the Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) train were taken by surprise when the train did not stop at Papanasam on Saturday.

Sources in the Tiruchi Railway Division said the passenger train left Mayiladuthurai Junction in the morning but the loco pilot did not stop at Papanasam station. The loco pilot applied emergency brakes about 100 metres after crossing the station upon being alerted by the guard about his lapse.

The loco pilot backed up till the Papanasam station. The DEMU train is operated by a loco pilot and does not have an assistant loco pilot, the authorities said.

The incident was immediately brought to the notice of the Tiruchi Railway Division authorities prompting them to initiate an inquiry. The loco pilot of the train and the guard were quizzed about the incident and the reason for its occurrence. The loco pilot was familiar with this route as he had been regularly working on this section, the authorities said. A detailed report would be submitted to the Divisional Railway Manager, Tiruchi, following the inquiry.
