Mandya DC checks on students hospitalised for food poisoning

Deputy Commissioner of Mandya Kumar visited Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) on March 17 to inquire about the health of the students of a private educational institution at Malavalli, who had taken ill allegedly after consuming contaminated food.

Mr. Kumar discussed the health condition of the students with the doctors. MIMS Director Dr. Narasimha Murthy and other senior doctors were present during the Deputy Commissioner’s visit to the hospital.

Students of a private educational institution at T. Kagepura in Malavalli taluk were among scores of people who had taken ill after consuming the food prepared at a feast in connection with Holi festivities on March 14.

A 13-year-old student from North East India, Kerlang, who was among the students who fell ill after consuming the food, died on March 16, sparking concern among the authorities.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who took note of the food poisoning case, directed the officials to ensure proper medical care of the students, and initiate stringent action against the persons responsible for the same.

The police have taken three persons into custody.

A large number of people, mainly belonging to the business community from Rajasthan, including women and children, were among the persons affected due to the food poisoning. They underwent medical treatment in government and private medical facilities in Mandya and Mysuru.
