An auto driver and his wife were arrested on charges of killing his 62-year-old mother at the latter’s house in Madhura Nagar Pappula Mill area of Vijayawada on December 26 (Thursday). The police recovered gold jewellery worth around ₹4 lakh from the couple.
The accused have been identified as M. Pedda Sambasiva Rao and his wife Vani.
Acting on a complaint, the Gunadala police registered a case and took up the investigation, said Central Zone Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) K. Damodar.
“Recently, Sambasiva Rao asked his mother, Mudu Lakshmi, to hand him over her gold ornaments so that he can clear his debts. He argued with his mother after she refused to do so,” Mr. Damodar said.
Irked by this, the couple hatched a plan to kill Mudu Lakshmi. They came to Mudu Lakshmi’s house on December 26. Sambasiva Rao and Vani allegedly smothered Mudu Lakshmi with a pillow when she was asleep.
Later, the couple fled. A police team led by Gunadala Circle Inspector Vasireddy Srinivas arrested the couple at the city railway station on Saturday when they were trying to escape to Hyderabad, the ACP said.
