The State Delimitation Commission headed by A. Shajahan will hold district-level hearings on complaints related to the first phase of the ward delimitation in local bodies in Kerala from January 16 to February 22.
The first hearing will be held in Pathanamthitta on January 16, Mr. Shajahan, who is also the State Election Commissioner, said on Friday (January 10, 2025).
Phase I of the delimitation covered wards in grama panchayats, municipalities and corporations.
In all, 16,042 complaints will be dealt with in the hearings in the 14 districts.
The schedule for the hearings is as follows: Pathanamthitta (January 16), Kottayam (January 17), Idukki (January 18), Kollam (January 28), Alappuzha (January 29), Ernakulam (January 30), Thrissur (January 31), Palakkad (February 4), Malappuram (February 5 and 6), Kasaragod (February 11), Kannur (February 12), Kozhikode (February 13 and 14), Wayanad (February 15), Thiruvananthapuram (February 21 and 22).
Malappuram tops the district list in the number of complaints (2,840) followed by Thiruvananthapuram (2,002), Kozhikode (1,957), Kannur (1,379), Thrissur (1,230), Palakkad (1,112) and Ernakulam (1,010). The number of complaints in other districts are as follows: Pathanamthitta (546), Kottayam (562), Idukki (482), Kollam (869), Alappuzha (723), Kasaragod (843) and Wayanad (487).
The commission had issued the draft notification on ward delimitation in grama panchayats, municipalities and corporations on November 18, 2024. It had given time till December 4, 2024 for lodging complaints.
Block panchayat wards will be covered in the second phase of the delimitation exercise and district panchayat wards in the third phase.
