General Education department files complaint against YouTuber

The General Education department has filed a complaint against a YouTuber who through a YouTube channel seemingly urged students not to waste time by going to school as higher secondary examinations were round the corner in March.

The Pathanamthitta Deputy Director of Education gave a complaint to the district Superintendent of Police.

After the YouTube video came to his attention, Minister for General Education V. Sivankutty had directed the Director of General Education (DGE) to intervene.

Following up on the complaint, the DGE will meet the State Police Chief in person.

Adequate attendance was mandatory to appear for the examinations, the Minister emphasised.

Meanwhile, the Federation of Higher Secondary Teachers’ Association sought that a case be registered against the YouTube channel and the YouTuber, alleging that the video made fun of current education practices and teachers. Besides urging students not to go to school, the YouTuber claimed that teachers wielded continuous evaluation marks as a weapon and even if the attendance declined, appearing for examinations would not be a problem, the federation said.

Action should be taken against the YouTube channel and the YouTuber that could have a long-lasting impact on higher secondary schools, the federation said.
