Amid allegations of fund misappropriation in the Kottayam municipality, attempts to convene a meeting of the council failed in view of strong protests from the Opposition side here on Wednesday. For the second consecutive day, the meeting was adjourned after the Opposition’s resolution was not allowed for discussion.
As the tension between the ruling UDF and the Opposition LDF’s councillors continued, vice-chairperson B. Gopakumar left the meeting when the council could not take up the agenda even after half an hour of the meeting. The chairperson then officially adjourned the council. The council meeting had been adjourned over the same issue on the previous day as well.
When the meeting began at 2.30 p.m., Opposition leader Sheeja Anil reiterated the need for a discussion and vote on the resolution. With the ruling side objecting the move, a heated debate ensued. After half an hour of arguing, the chairperson dissolved the council. Interestingly, the BJP councillors have refrained from getting involved in the heated arguments between the LDF and the UDF.
Following the adjournment of the council for two days, the approval of 100 agenda items was postponed. These include DPR to build a new shopping complex cum bus bay at the old bus stand in Thirunakkara. There were 50 agenda items on Wednesday, including invitations, the rehabilitation of traders who were evicted from the old building, and the renewal of the lease of the Thirunakkara ground.
