Tension prevailed for some time at the Government Rajah Mirasdar Hospital in Thanjavur on Thursday (April 24, 2025) after smoke emanated from the Labour Ward block.
According to official sources, the smoke was noticed from a room at the first floor of the labour ward block around noon. When the hospital staff checked the room, it was ascertained that the smoke emanated from the air-conditioner unit fitted at that room.
As the smoke engulfed the entire floor, some of the pregnant women developed breathing problem and they, along with others admitted at the first floor, were shifted to a ward at the adjacent building immediately.
Subsequently, fire and rescue service personnel rushed in and confirmed that the cause of thick smoke was due to an electrical short circuit at the air-conditioning unit. Soon, the fire was put out.
As a precautionary measure, pregnant women housed at the ground floor of the building were also moved to the adjacent building, said the Collector, B. Priyanka Pankajam, who inspected the rescue operations.
No one had sustained any injury or developed serious complications due the incident, she said and added that the doctors have confirmed that all the pregnant women were safe.
