The State government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with HESS AG, HESS INDIA, and SSB AG to launch a pilot Electric Rapid Transit (e-RT) project between Hubballi and Dharwad.
Officials of the State government and representatives of the companies signed the documents in Bengaluru on Saturday. Officers said that this was a fully electric system and will operate on elevated roads in the city and on the ground in other places. In this, 250 people can travel at a time. A feasibility study was conducted over the last year. Representatives of the companies informed that this metro-style transportation system is being successfully implemented in many European countries.
Labour Minister Santosh Lad said he had visited Switzerland to Study the Project’s Successful Pilot Implementation. He explained the issues like feasibility and the possible positive outcomes of the project. He said the the initiative aims to provide eco-friendly, efficient urban transport for Hubballi-Dharwad.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that if this project is successful in Hubballi and Dharwad, it can be extended to other second-tier cities of the State. He instructed officials to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) on the implementation of the project within three months.
Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, Social Welfare Minister H.C. Mahadevappa, Chief Secretary to the Government Shalini Rajneesh, Advocate General Shashikaran Shetty, and representatives from HESS AG and SSB AG, Switzerland, including Susan von Sury, Yves Siegrist, Burak Sencer, and Francois Paetzold, were present on the occasion.
