Caste re-survey begins

The exercise of recording information from respondents who could not be a part of the caste survey began on Sunday.

The Telangana government had announced that those who were unable to provide details to enumerators could do so beginning February 16 till February 28. An estimated 3.1% of the total population of the State, they claimed, could not take part in the survey.

An official aware of the developments said that while data on the exact number of citizens who had expressed their intention of voluntarily providing information to enumerators on day one of the second phase of the survey were not readily available, he said that the process had indeed begun.

The caste survey courted controversy with Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president K. T. Rama Rao criticising the exercise even as certain Backward Classes associations raised objections. He alleged, on X, that the data was incomplete.

Meanwhile, Minister for Backward Classes Welfare Ponnam Prabhakar tore into the BRS and accused the party of harbouring β€˜anti-BC’ mindset as its top leaders did not participate in the survey. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay too waded in, and had accused the Congress of reducing the BC population in the survey.
