In a bid to foster a culture of “responsible animal care”, the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) and the NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad have agreed to work together to train animal welfare volunteers in related laws and procedures.
The two organisations signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday to provide legal training to civil society members who support the District Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCAs) and State Animal Welfare Boards in their efforts to assist animals. The Union Animal Husbandry Ministry said in a statement that the MoU will help in providing specialised training and education to Honorary Animal Welfare Representatives (HAWRs) who apply with AWBI. Participants will be equipped with essential knowledge in animal welfare laws, procedures, investigative techniques and related subjects.
The MoU was signed by AWBI chairman Abhijit Mitra and NALSAR University vice-chancellor Shrikrishna Deva Rao in Hyderabad. The three-day training for HAWRs will be conducted in batches, with a maximum of 25 participants per session. AWBI will issue certifications to HAWRs upon completion of the training.
“Intellectual property rights for the training materials remain with NALSAR while AWBI will have exclusive usage rights for HAWR training,” the Ministry said. HAWRs are members of the civil society who address animal cruelty issues such as injuries, excessive load-bearing, and inhumane treatment.
