Akalis, BJP target AAP govt in Punjab over law and order

Opposition parties cornered the AAP government on the state of law and order in Punjab after an explosion at the Islamabad police station in Amritsar, Punjab. The State police chief chaired a high-level meeting after the blast on Tuesday.

An official statement said Punjab’s Director General of Police (DGP), Gaurav Yadav, visited the police station in Amritsar following the “attack.” He directed officers to ensure professional policing and to take strict action against the perpetrators. The visit came a few hours after the incident was reported at around 3am on Tuesday.

Chairing the meeting, Mr. Yadav emphasised the need for officers to use both technical and human intelligence to detect and apprehend those responsible for the attack. He asked officers to identify common trends and patterns in such crimes and conduct investigations in a scientific manner, utilising technical and forensic tools to detect crimes and ensure convictions.

Senior SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia said Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann should own moral responsibility “for the worsening law and order situation in Punjab and resign as Home Minister immediately.”

The Akali leader said that the AAP government could not take attacks on police stations lightly. “When a grenade exploded at the Majitha police station in an earlier incident, the police claimed that a tire had burst… All these attacks are clear indications of an intelligence failure and that the Chief Minister should own moral responsibility for the same,” he said.

BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh said the incident displayed the complete breakdown of law and order in the State. “These repeated explosions show that the AAP government has failed to check violent forces. The failure of the AAP government is a matter of great concern for Punjab,” he said.
