Tomato prices surge to Rs 100/Kg in Karnataka, Andhra, and Mahara

The heatwaves sweeping across the country are affecting the household budgets with the reports indicating that tomato prices have surged to record highs in several states. 

In Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra, tomatoes are now retailing at Rs 90-100/kg. Mumbai, for instance, is witnessing prices ranging between Rs 80 and Rs 100/kg, a stark increase from the previous Rs 35/kg. Similar trends are seen in Kasaragod, where prices are anticipated to reach Rs 100/kg soon.

In Hyderabad, prices are nearing Rs 100/kg, with current rates at Rs 80-90/kg, attributed to the prolonged heat and inadequate rainfall in Telangana’s districts. 

The Kolar Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC), Asia’s second-largest tomato market, recorded a reduced influx of tomatoes this year, receiving nearly 9,129 quintals on June 18, which is 2,000 quintals less compared to last year.
