Tight security in Tiruchi, Ariyalur for PM’s visit

Security has been stepped up at the Tiruchi International Airport and in and around a hotel in the city in view of the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday.

Mr. Modi is scheduled to participate in the Aadi Thiruvathirai festival at Gangaikonda Cholapuram in Ariyalur district on Sunday and release a coin in honour of the King Rajendra Chola I. 

The police said Mr. Modi will land in Tiruchi on a special flight from Thoothukudi at around 10.30 p.m. on Saturday and stay in a hotel situated on the Collector Office Road. 

Mr. Modi will proceed to the airport on Sunday morning by road and board a chopper to Gangaikonda Cholapuram to participate in the function which is to be organised near the temple. Mr. Modi will return by chopper to the Tiruchi airport and leave for New Delhi in the afternoon, the sources said.

A multi-layer security has been put in place at the airport where anti-sabotage teams have been deployed. About 1,500 police personnel have been mobilised by the Tiruchi City Police in connection with the Prime Minister’s visit.

Security has been heightened at Gangaikonda Cholapuram with teams of police personnel deployed at the helipad, venue, and in the surrounding areas. Around 2,200 police personnel are being deployed at Gangaikonda Cholapuram, the sources added.
