The redevelopment project at the Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station has entered its next key phase, developing amenities to meet the needs of modern travellers. Works on the nine-story north block-2 building and the ground floor at the Nagercoil end of the present station building commenced on Saturday (April 5, 2025).
The overall project is estimated to cost around ₹500 crore. Once completed, the building will be of airport-standards, said officials.
In order to facilitate the complete redevelopment, at least half of the existing parking area has to be utilised. Hence, the present parking facility at the Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station has been reduced.
In preparation for the extensive construction works, major parking restrictions have also been enforced on the station premises from Saturday. The Railways has requested commuters and travellers to factor in these changes when planning their journeys.
The north block-2 building is proposed as arrival block as per the new plan. The building will be 89 metres long. The initial three floors will have a width of 14 metres, which will be increased to 20 metres for the remaining seven floors. Ground floor will be the arrival lobby from the platforms featuring retail stores, hotels, commercial lobbies, toilets, tourist information desk, lift, escalator, stair cases and so on.
The first floor will be mezzanine floor with Railway offices, hotel, commercial lobbies, toilets, lift, escalator and stair cases. The second floor will be concourse floor with connectivity from the arrival concourse, which will have access from all platforms with lift, escalator and stair cases. The concourse floor will have Railway offices, retail stores, hotel, commercial lobbies, toilets, lift, escalator and stair cases.
Fully commercial floors
The remaining seven floors (from third floor to ninth floor) will be fully commercial floors. These can be developed as hotels. The front roof of the main building (canopy) will be in the shape of a wave. It will be painted aqua green to lend a feel of sea and beach in sky view, according to Railway officials.
With superior infrastructure, futuristic facilities, and a pleasing ambience, the redeveloped railway station is expected to cater to the needs of new-age passengers, said officials.
