In a major development about the much anticipated Thalaivar 173 — starring superstar Rajinikanth and produced by Kamal Haasan — director Sundar C. has opted out of the project. The news comes days after the announcement of the two Tamil cinema legends coming together for a film.
In a press release shared with publicists, Sundar C. wrote that he is stepping back from the project. “It is with a heavy heart that I share some important news with you. Due to unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances, I have made the difficult decision to step back from the prestigious project Thalaivar 173,” he wrote.
The Aranmanai franchise and Anbe Sivam director added that the project was a “dream come true” opportunity for him. Sundar’s decision has now left fans wondering who will sit in the director’s chair for the hyped project, which is set to be released by Red Giants Movies during Pongal 2027.
“In life, there are moments when we must follow the path laid out for us, even if it diverges from our dreams. My association with these two icons (Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan) goes back a long way. I will always hold them in the highest regard,” Sundar wrote.
The Madha Gaja Raja director added, “Although I am stepping away from this opportunity, I shall continue to seek their expert guidance. I thank both of them from the bottom of my heart for considering me for this magnum opus.”
The news caused immense disappointment among the fans of both the superstars. Sundar apologised to the ardent followers of the legendary actors. “Please accept my sincere apologies if this news has disappointed those who had eagerly anticipated this venture. I am committed to making it up to you and promise to continue bringing you entertainment that keeps your spirits in high.”

Thalaivar 173 is set to bring together Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth after 46 years. To be produced by Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International (RKFI), the project was confirmed by the actor while speaking at the NEXA SIIMA Awards 2025. Sundar had directed Rajinikanth in Arunachalam (1997)and Kamal Haasan in Anbe Sivam (2003).
