Rupal, Manu hog the limelight


Uttar Pradesh’s Rupal stormed to victory in the women’s 400m event in the 6th Indian Open 400m competition in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday.

Thiruvananthapuram Uttar Pradesh’s Rupal Chaudhary started her season on a promising note by winning the women’s event in the 6th Indian Open 400m competition 2025 at the LNCPE Athletics stadium here on Monday.

Rupal, a former under-20 world bronze medallist and whose career was beset by injuries, came up with a dizzying run at the second curve and motored past Asian Games medallist Vithya Ramraj (Tamil Nadu) to clock 52.41s for the gold. Vithya, who set the pace initially, settled for the silver in 53.62s. Kerala K.Sneha finished third in 47.90s.

National Games, bronze medallist T.S. Manu of Kerala came up with a career best performance of 46.51s to win gold in the men’s event. Manu served notice by improving his personal best (47.08s) by clocking 46.56s in the preliminary heats in the morning. The final was a two horse race between Manu and Delhi’s Jay Kumar and there was little to separate the two athletes until Manu pulled away in the last 20 metres to finish first. Jaya Kumar came second in 46.93 while his team-mate Tushar Kanti Manna was third in 47s.

Tamil Nadu M. Sharan won the boys under-20 event in 47.19s while Kerala’s Mohammed Ashfaq won the under-18 event in 47.49s. V. Deshika (TN) won the girls under-20 event while Kashish Bhagat won the under-18 event.

The results: Men: 1. T.S. Manu (Kerala) 46.51s, 2. Jay Kumar (Delhi) 46.93, 3. Tushar Kanti Manna (Delhi) 47.00.

Under-20: 1. M. Sharan (TN) 47.19s, 2. Jerome Sanjay (TN) 47.49, 3. Setu Mishra (Bihar) 47.74.

Under-18: 1. Mohammed Ashfaq (Kerala) 47.49s, 2. Yugank Choudhar (UP) 48.31, 3. Nithin Gowda (TN) 48.44.

Women: 1. Rupal Chaudhary (UP) 52.41s, 2. R. Vithya Ramraj (TN) 53.62, 3. K. Sneha (Kerala) 54.09.

Under-20: 1. V. Dheshika (TN) 54.54s, 2. Sandra Mol Sabu (Kerala) 54.61,3.Isha Rajesh (Mah) 55.44.

Under-18: 1. Kashish Bhagat (Mah) 56.92s, 2. V. Gunashya (TN) 57.62, Prachi Sharma (Har) 58.52.
