Mumbai captain Shreyas Iyer stated that his teammate Prithvi Shaw needs to “improve his work ethic”. Shaw has faced criticism in recent times over fitness concerns, and there are fears that he is wasting his natural talent.
Shaw, unsigned in the 2025 IPL auctions, would have liked to respond with big runs in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) here, but it was not to be. Barring a 49 against Vidarbha in the quarterfinal, the opener struggled to make a mark.
“I think Prithvi is a gifted player. The amount of talent he possesses, no one else has it. It is just that he needs to improve his work ethic. He needs to get his work ethics right. If he does that, sky is the limit for him,” Shreyas said, after leading Mumbai to the SMAT title here on Sunday.
There is no room for mollycoddling in the world of professional sport, Shreyas said.
“I cannot force him (to change his ways). He has played so much cricket. Everyone has given him inputs. At the end of the day, it’s his job to figure out things for himself. We can’t babysit anyone, right? Every professional playing at this level needs to know what they should be doing. He has also done it in the past. He has to focus. He has to sit back, put a thinking cap on, and figure it out himself. He will get the answers by himself. No one can force him to do anything,” Shreyas said.
