A wasteful Chennaiyin FC went down 2-0 to East Bengal FC in an Indian Super League football match at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Saturday, its third straight loss.
P.V. Vishnu and Jeakson Singh were on target for the Red and Gold brigade as the home team failed to cash in on the opportunities that came its way.
Chennaiyin had the better of the exchanges in the opening half, but its forward-line couldn’t find the back of the net.
Connor Shields played a key role in creating chances and stretching the East Bengal defence in wide areas.
The Kolkata team’s defence managed to soak in the pressure and keep CFC at bay.
The best chance came when Laldinpuia Pachuau leapt to meet a Shields corner, but his header didn’t trouble custodian Prabhsukhan Gill.
Connor and Daniel Chima Chukwu orchestrated a few good moves but were found wanting in front of goal.
In the second half, CFC began well but couldn’t break the deadlock. In the 54th minute, East Bengal scored against the run of play when Vishnu slotted home after goalkeeper Mohammed Nawaz had saved Saul Crespo’s shot.
In the 59th minute, Crespo was stretchered out after pulling his hamstring and was replaced by Jeakson Singh.
Jeakson doubled the lead in the 84th minute with a thunderous long-range shot into the top left corner of the net, silencing the home crowd. It was the East Bengal’s second straight win and moved it to 11th in the standings with seven points.
Chennaiyin FC remains winless at home in the ongoing season and next hosts Hyderabad FC on December 11.
The result: Chennaiyin FC 0 lost to East Bengal 2 (P.V. Vishnu 54, Jeakson Singh 84).
