The Tamil Nadu government is likely to appoint special officers to govern the majority of rural local bodies in 28 districts as the tenure of their elected representatives has ended. Official sources said the State was planning to table a legislation in the upcoming Assembly session, to appoint special officers till elections are held to these local bodies. They cited the recent judgment of the Madras High Court, as per which elections could not be held till the delimitation process was completed. The tenure of elected representatives ended in 28 district panchayats, over 9,600 village panchayats and over 300 panchayat unions on Sunday evening.
