Rock nostalgia, live in Chennai by the 55-year old legacy band The Blue Bird

The Blue Birds are probably one of the oldest and most iconic rock bands in the country. Founded in Madurai in 1969 by a group of Anglo-Indians, the band boasts a glorious 55-year legacy. “We are known for our authentic renditions of classic rock from the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s,” says Rajan Muthukrishnan, the band’s bass player.

During the 1980s and ’90s, as the demand for light music grew, the band branched out beyond classic rock. “In 2010, Rajashekaran Jesudasan — often fondly referred to as the ‘Mick Jagger of India’ — who was the lead vocalist of the original band, and I re-formed The Blue Birds in Chennai, with the permission of the founders of the original Madurai band,” says Rajan.

Over the years, the band has expanded to include several talented musicians. The lead vocalists are Rajashekaran Jesudasan, Anjale Stephanos, Melany Roberts, and Kdu Moorthy. The guitarists are Jaideep Vivekanand and Amitav Gautam, with Rajan on bass, Anish Chacko on keyboards, and Shyam Rao on drums.

On December 26, led by the legendary Rajashekaran, The Blue Birds will present a special tribute to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, celebrating the music that defined rock ’n’ roll. “Some of Rajashekaran’s original compositions, which have been immensely popular since the 1970s, will also be part of the set. We will additionally perform songs by Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, and other artists from that era,” says Rajan.

The evening promises a nostalgic, high-energy experience, featuring timeless classics such as Hey Jude, Twist and Shout, Honky Tonk Women, Jumpin’ Jack Flash, and Sympathy for the Devil. “Since our inception, our objective has always been to entertain and connect with audiences. We feed off their energy and tailor our music accordingly. So get ready for an uncompromisingly nostalgic evening,” says Rajan.
