The Union Railway Ministry has approved a new train to run between Agartala and Guwahati to ease the rush of passengers. Former Tripura Chief Minister and Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb announced on Saturday (May 24, 2025) that this decision was made following his demand to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

The new train will start from Agartala and stop at Narangi (NNGE) station on the outskirts of Guwahati. However, the schedule for this train has not yet been released.

During his meeting with the Railway Minister on April 22 of this year, Mr. Deb, who is also the MP from West Tripura Lok Sabha constituency, raised demands for the introduction of more express trains and the modernisation of services in the state.

One of these demands was for the introduction of a new express train to alleviate the traffic of passengers at both Agartala and Guwahati. The approval for this new express train was received within a month of the demand and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw communicated this to Biplab Kumar Deb through a letter.

Mr. Deb expressed his gratitude to the Union Railway Minister for taking quick action and expressed hope that other issues, such as infrastructure development in the state’s railway communication sector, modernisation of services, double lanes and extension of railway lines will also be addressed.

Meanwhile, the Northeastern Frontier Railways (NFR) on Saturday (May 24, 2025) successfully conducted a trial run with an electric locomotive between a station in southern Assam and Agartala. The trial run of a goods train was earlier completed between Badarpur (Assam) and Jirania stations (near Agartala) on February 6 of this year.

The NFR has completed a ₹46 crore electrification project to integrate the state into the national railway grid with the aim of converting from diesel-powered engines to electric locomotives.
