Parents of the doctor who was raped and killed while on duty at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in August last year have expressed dissatisfaction with the manner in which the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has handled the probe.

“We are unhappy with how the CBI has probed the case. We do not think their investigation was fair or accurate. While they named only one person in their chargesheet, we believe more people were involved. We will not rest till the larger conspiracy behind our daughter’s deaths is brought to light,” the victim’s father told The Hindu on Saturday (June 7, 2025). The victim’s family has changed the legal counsel for their case. They are now being represented by senior advocate Phiroze Edulji.

The CBI had taken over the investigation into the rape and murder of the doctor, as well as alleged financial irregularities linked to the medical college and hospital, in August 2024.

The agency named only one individual — former civic volunteer Sanjay Roy — in the chargesheet filed on October 7, 2024. Mr. Roy was convicted of rape and murder by a Kolkata court in January 2025 and sentenced to life imprisonment.

However, the victim’s parents subsequently approached the Calcutta High Court, seeking further investigation. On March 28 this year, the CBI informed the court that its investigation, supported by the opinion of a board of medical experts, found that the incident was not a gang rape.

The victim’s father also alleged procedural lapses in the course of the investigation. The parents said the CBI has not filed any supplementary chargesheet in the rape and murder case, since the first and only chargesheet filed in October 2024, and that the agency ceased all communication with the family after November last year.

“The last time we spoke, they simply asked us to remain patient. We have also sought an audience with the Prime Minister, Home Minister, and the President multiple times since last year, but we haven’t received any positive response. Both the central government as well as the state government have failed us,” he said.

The next hearing of the case, which is pending before the Calcutta High Court, is scheduled for June 30.

“Till now, the reports that the CBI has given us, many of them have a lot of proof, but they are not making them public,” the father added.

Meanwhile, Abhaya Mancha, a doctors’ forum formed in solidarity with the deceased doctor, has intensified its protest.

“On the 9th of every month, we (Abhaya Mancha) stage protests, either centrally across the State or in some pockets. This is because the victim was raped and murdered on 9th August. This month, on June 9, we will hold a protest rally and walk to the Tala Police Station,” Dr. Subarna Goswami, a representative of the forum, said.

The FIR in the case was registered at Tala Police Station. During the initial phase of the investigation, the then Officer-in-Charge of the station, Abhijit Mondal, was accused of “misleading the investigation.” He was taken into custody by the CBI and later suspended from duty.
