An inmate, accused in a murder case, was found dead at the central prison in Shivamogga, located at Sogane near Shivamogga, on Saturday (August 2, 2025) evening.
The deceased has been identified as Basavaraj, 38, a native of Shikaripur in Shivamogga district. The jail staff, who were on the rounds, noticed him attempting to end his life at his barrack – 42, around 7 p.m. The staff shifted him to the prison hospital and later shifted him to McGann Hospital in the city. The doctors at the hospital declared him ‘brought dead’.
Basavaraj was accused of murdering his wife. Shikaripur Town Police registered a case and arrested him. A Shikaripur court remanded him to judicial custody on June 16.
