Police shoot at murder accused when he attempts to flee

The Holehonnur police in Bhadravati taluk shot at a person, who was an accused in a murder case, and arrested him as he tried to escape after allegedly assaulting a policeman, near Holalur in Shivamogga taluk on Monday.

Manjunath was one of the accused in the murder of Hemanna, reported on May 9. Hemanna, an areca merchant, was murdered while he was on a morning walk at Hosakoppa near Holehonnur.

The police had registered the case. They had suspected the role of three people, including Manjunath, in the murder. Acting on a tip-off, the police went to arrest Manjunath when he tried to escape after assaulting a policeman, Prakash.

Superintendent of Police, Shivamogga, G.K. Mithun Kumar, said, “Police inspector Lakshmipathi was forced to open fire to safeguard his staff and secure the accused.”

Manjunath suffered a bullet injury to his right leg. He was admitted to a hospital.
