In all of this, Putin emerges as a major beneficiary. By waiting patiently for a change in Washington, consolidating his military position on the ground, and holding out against sanctions, he has positioned himself well for this moment. With the U.S. signaling a potential withdrawal from European security commitments, Putin is not only winning the military battle but also the larger war of narrative. If Trump delivers on his rhetoric, Russia may soon find itself in a stronger position than it has been in years.
Trump’s latest comments are not just about Zelenskyy. They represent a seismic shift in the way America sees its role in global conflicts, in its relationship with Europe, and in its strategic calculus regarding Russia and China.
