Insensitive remarks
No right thinking individual, particularly those holding a top position in the judiciary, will stoop to a low level and make derogatory and demeaning remarks in his/her judgments. We do come across judgments being delivered by judicial officers holding various positions across the country that are at sharp variance with accepted norms of decency and assail human rights with impunity. There need to be courses on gender sensitisation for judicial officers of all the ranks (Page 1, “SC stays HC ‘inhuman’ remarks on rape attempt”, March 27).

As a junior lawyer who aspires to become a High Court judge someday, I have always believed that the judiciary exists as a pillar of integrity and justice. However, in conversations with seniors, I am disheartened to hear that reaching such a position might require more than just merit. A senior once told me, “If you want to achieve your dream, you may have to make certain compromises.” Recent incidents involving the judiciary raise concerns. How much more remains hidden?
Courts have long been regarded as temples of justice, and judges, their guiding figures. It is time for honest introspection within the system to ensure that the principles of fairness and integrity remain uncompromised.
