Judiciary, its integrity

These are testing times for the Indian judiciary, with its image, reputation, respect and public faith under scrutiny (Page 1, March 25). But it is also time to support the legal system, which is a solid pillar in India’s democracy.

The Supreme Court of India needs to be applauded for its timely actions in the case. There could be some wrong men present in every system. But there are also brilliant men, perhaps more in number, working in great silence and with great devotion. To question the entire system would be unwise.

Balasubramaniam Pavani,

Secunderabad

Though the sordid and unfortunate incident of the recovery of a large amount of burnt currency notes at the residence of a sitting High Court judge has jolted the conscience of the nation, this solitary instance should not be allowed to be used by (unscrupulous) politicians as a ruse to rob the judiciary of its autonomy and independence. There is a need to effect judicial reforms, but this should not result in the disrobing of the judiciary’s independence and autonomy. The executive should not attempt to subdue the judiciary.

Ravi Mathur,

Noida, Uttar Pradesh

Polishing agent

Though The Board of Control for Cricket in India has lifted the ban on the use of saliva in polishing the ball during play in the Indian Premier League, it is still medically unethical since the microbiome of one’s saliva is not always compatible with others. One hopes that players take adequate precautions in wiping their hands with a napkin frequently during play and thoroughly washing their hands at the end of play.

Dr. V. Purushothaman,

Chennai
