Letters to The Editor — March 25, 2025

Judiciary and integrity

As more details emerge about the fire incident at the residence of a Delhi High Court judge, one must remember the line from Shakespeare’s Hamlet: ‘Something is rotten in the state of Denmark’ (Page 1, March 24). One wonders how a store room within the premises can be utilised by all and sundry. The higher judiciary needs to act quickly to restore public faith in the judicial system.

J. Radhakrishna Kurup,

Ettumanoor, Kottayam, Kerala

I write this letter as a former Member of Parliament. The way the Supreme Court of India responded to ‘accidental finding’ of unaccounted cash bundles in the judge’s residence is commendable. All the steps taken will certainly infuse confidence in the minds of people on the integrity of the institution. The judiciary should not be seen as enjoying immunity from legal action when it comes to the corrupt. There should be an in-built mechanism to deal with corruption in the judiciary, in addition to the procedures followed in regular law.

Dr. D.V.G. Sankara Rao,

Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh

It is imperative that the news media — print, social media and TV channels — should refrain from jumping the gun with ‘debates’ and its usual trial by media under the pretext of free speech. It is disturbing that a High Court judge has invited the need for a probe into his dealings.

There is no doubt that the incident has cast a shadow on the judiciary especially when judges must possess qualities such as transparency, accountability, integrity, impartiality, selflessness, and fairness. To ensure that there is an impartial judicial system, it is essential that the corrupt elements who stain the judiciary’s functioning are weeded out.

Dr. Jitesh Mori,

Kutch, Gujarat

The reality is that our overarching political system is devoid of ethical or moral standards and is awash with money, even as ordinary citizens struggle to make ends meet. It is a disgrace. During the elections last year, large amounts of cash, liquor, and valuables were seized. Corruption has seeped into every aspect of society, and our leaders seem uninterested in addressing it. India deserves better.

V. Nagarajan,

Chennai

Caesar’s wife must be above suspicion. In a way, the fire in the judge’s residence is also an Agni Pariksha for the judiciary.

Mahatma and the media

The report, “The Late Mr. Kasturi Ranga Iyengar” (Editorial page, ‘From the Archives – The Hindu, A Hundred Years Ago’, March 22, 1925), was an inspiring discourse. Barring a few exceptions, journalism of the day in India finds itself distracted from the missionary journalistic path shown by Mahatma Gandhi. Will present-day journalism in India return spiritedly to the selfless road of reporting?

Sparkling debut

Amidst a sea of yellow jerseys and roaring chants, an unassuming 24-year-old scripted a wonderful IPL debut for Mumbai Indians at Chennai on Sunday. Vignesh Puthur spun magic that put the brakes on CSK’s chase temporarily. The ‘whistle podu’ army will not forget Vignesh Puthur’s name anytime soon.

R. Sivakumar,
