State Budget logo
The use of the Tamil letter ‘Ru ‘ in the promotional logo for the Tamil Nadu Budget is a minor issue when compared to the fierce controversy over the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the three-language policy (Page 1, March 14). The central government must climb down from its adamant stand and stop pushing the use of Hindi through the back door. It must work sincerely for the development of all languages. When smaller countries such as Sri Lanka and Singapore which have more than two official languages are able to run smoothly, it is strange why a language issue is diverting the country’s energies and attention from development and progress.

There is no denying that the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in Tamil Nadu is at loggerheads with the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government over the issue of delimitation and the three-language policy under the NEP. One wonders why it has brought in another issue which will further chafe the fraying State-Centre relationship.

The Tamil Nadu government’s move is an immature attempt at confrontational politics. But we are now in the second decade of the 21st century and not in the 1960s. Learning Hindi as a third language is in the best interests of the State’s youth, providing them much-needed mobility and the ability to survive comfortably anywhere in India. The theatrics of the DMK is not its unbounded love for Tamil, but the approaching Assembly elections of 2026.

Cap on vehicles a day
The order by the Madras High Court, on the number of vehicles entering the Nilgiris and Kodaikanal, is a pointer to the unprecedented situation the hill stations are facing. Fixing a cap on tourist vehicles could be extended to other places such as places of worship in hilly areas. This is one reason why the ropeway transport system became popular — to reduce road traffic and the number of tourists staying overnight.
