Trump again
With Donald Trump sworn-in as the 47th President of the United States, one hopes that he ushers in an era of peaceful coexistence.
I wish someone would explain to Mr. Trump the meaning of “Maithreem Bhajatha” that M.S. Subbulakshmi sang in the UN General Assembly in 1966, which became an anthem for universal friendship and world peace.

Cases and verdicts
The two verdicts in two high-profile crimes are cause for discussion. In Kerala, a woman who poisoned a man she was in a relationship with, has been awarded the death sentence while the rapist-murderer in the Kolkata hospital case has been awarded life imprisonment. Both come under the rarest of rare cases and the Kolkata case verdict is questionable.

On cow urine
I write this letter as a former Director of Research and Health, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. Cow urine may have molecules with ‘anti-infective’ properties, but to almost recommend the consumption of voided urine is quite harmful as it can be a source of pathogens such as leptospires and E. Coli, when a cow harbours such pathogens (“Research papers validate anti-infective properties of cow urine: IIT-M Director”, January 21).

One is left shell shocked by the Director’s statements, which point to the extent to which fake beliefs can numb even brilliant minds.

As the director of a premier engineering and research institution in the world, the gentleman should be more thoughtful when such views are stated.
Such fringe views, though few and far between, should not be given prominence as they show the medical and scientific community in a bad light. India should not be distracted by myths and scientifically unsustainable claims.
