Odissi dance brings in devotional themes live at Tamil Isai Sangam festival in Madurai

The third day of the 51st anniversary series at the Tamil Isai Sangam festival witnessed a classic Odissi dance by Kousiki Lalatika Patnaik, disciple of Sushree Mohanty.

The performance had all the components of viz fundamental Odissi postures, square chauka and the graceful three-bent Tribhanga alongside specific movements of head, feet and hands. 

She began with Mangalacharana (dedicated to Lord Shiva), saluting Mother Earth to forgive for stamping on her, through “ Jatatavi-gala-jjala” a Shiva Tandava Stotram set in Ek Tal.

She then went on to perform “ tha jam Tha rijam”(Pallavi style of Odissi dance in Madhyamavati) the dance portraying Cloud, peacock and a young girl, welcoming the monsoon on the first day of Ashada month. 

Abhinaya, the art of expression, was showcased well through her gesture (splashing of water), emotion (expression of love) and movement (the systemic beat within Talam) for “kielo sajani” by Kavi Banamali Das set in Ek Tal and ragam Mishra Khamas.

In her next item, “ Astashambu” , Ms Kousiki portrayed the eight divine facets of Lord Shiva, which had the storytelling and movements in Hindustani raga Malkaun or Maalkosh. 

Lord Krishna’s childhood pranks viz killing of Butana, showing Yashoda the Universe in her mouth was performed for Poet Kavi Banamali’s “ Kede Chhanda jaane”. 

To conclude the performance she performed Moksha (the liberation and spiritual freedom in odyssey dance) for “ sarve bhavantu sukhina sarve”.

The rasikas applauded the program for its fluid Torso movements, expressive abhinaya and devotional themes.
