NHRC seeks report from U.P. over custodial deaths in Varanasi jail

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday (June 25, 2025) issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government over the reported deaths of three prisoners lodged in Varanasi jail.

According to initial reports, the deaths occurred on June 15 and 16, 2025. The deceased include two male inmates and one female inmate, who allegedly died due to illness and heart-related complications.

Observing that the incident raises serious concerns regarding the violation of human rights of prisoners in custody, the Commission has issued notices to the Director General of Prisons and the Commissioner of Police, Varanasi, calling for a detailed report within two weeks.

The report is expected to include inquest and post-mortem examination findings, the initial health screening records of all three deceased prisoners, as well as the relevant magisterial inquiry reports, the NHRC said.
