Never imagined that I would represent the country at a World Cup: Deepesh Devendran

Fast, aggressive and relentless — that sums up Tamil Nadu pacer Deepesh Devendran’s showing in the recently-concluded under-19 Asia Cup tournament in Dubai.

The teenager finished as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 14 wickets in five matches, including a best of five for 22 against Malaysia.

The 17-year-old’s performances have earned him a place in India’s squad for the ICC u-19 World Cup, scheduled to be held in Zimbabwe and Namibia from January 15 to February 6 next year. Deepesh’s Tamil Nadu teammate and all-rounder R.S. Ambrish, too, has made the cut.

In an exclusive interaction with the The Hindu, Deepesh expressed his delight at being selected and reflected on his Asia Cup performances.

“I’m really happy to be part of the squad. Honestly, I just love playing the game. I never imagined that I would represent the country at a World Cup or an Asia Cup, and to be here now makes me extremely happy,” said Deepesh.

Speaking about the team environment, he said: “Everyone is friendly and, more importantly, very helpful. We understand our strengths, and the bonding within the group is strong. We gel well.”

Deepesh also credited the coaching staff for giving the players freedom. “Our coaches didn’t put any pressure on us, and that made a huge difference, especially for me. They just told us to go out, express ourselves without fear, and that really helped.”

Deepesh also acknowledged the role of senior cricketers in his development. “I want to mention (TN pacer) Sandeep Warrier, who has guided me throughout and played a big role in my development. Also, (former India seamer) Debashish Mohanty helped me a lot during the Australia series. He told me to go out and do what I do best and assured me of his backing, and a lot of the credit goes to him as well”.
