New Delhi:

The Supreme Court on Friday proposed directing the central government to post police personnel at road checkpoints on Delhi’s borders to monitor entry of trucks into the national capital region, which is battling its annual air quality crisis and has implemented measures that include banning entry of commercial vehicles for non-essential goods or services.

“Tell us how you (the Delhi government) are stopping entry of trucks? We want a team of experts to monitor the entry of trucks into the NCR region and we will take a call,” the court, hearing a long-running matter on anti-pollution measures by the ruling Aam Aadmi Party and police, said.

The court also dismissed as “arbitrary” the Delhi government counsel’s plea they had, in fact, stopped trucks carrying non-essential goods from entering the city, observing, “This is meaningless if you’re not providing the list of the entry points. It cannot be verified.”
