Minimum import price set for anti-bacterial drug API

India revised the policy condition governing import of Sulphadiazine active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) recently by imposing a minimum import price (MIP).

The import of Sulphadiazine API having a CIF value of less than Rs.1,774 per kg is restricted till September 30, 2026, with immediate effect, the Directorate General Of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification on October 10.

The MIP condition will, however, not be applicable for imports by Advance Authorization holders, export oriented units and units in the special economic zones, subject to the condition that the imported inputs are not sold in the domestic tariff area (DTA).

Ahead of its decision, the DGFT had conducted consultations to review the proposal and assess its impact on all stakeholders involved. The Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India had intimated its members last month about a meeting scheduled for September 18 on the proposed MIP on the API.
