Mercury dips below 40°C in most parts of Telangana; heavy rain alert in 11 districts on May 16

Most parts of Telangana recorded a drop in maximum temperatures on Wednesday (May 14, 2025), with the mercury falling below 40°C in the majority of the State’s 33 districts. According to the Telangana State Development Planning Society (TGDPS), only five districts recorded temperatures above the 40°C mark, with Nidamanoor in Nalgonda emerging as the hottest at 41.1°C.

In contrast, Mulugu recorded a comparatively mild 35.7°C, while Hyderabad and its neighbouring district Medchal Malkajgiri logged 39.4°C. Rangareddy district was slightly warmer at 39.5°C. Morning showers were reported in Hyderabad and its surrounding areas, followed by clear skies and sunshine by late morning.

Heavy rainfall alert in 11 districts

Scattered rainfall across Telangana over the past few days has helped bring down daytime temperatures, and weather conditions suggest the trend may continue. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert in 11 districts for Friday (May 16, 2025) warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds.

The districts likely to be impacted include Nirmal, Nizamabad, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Medak, Kamareddy, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Narayanpet, and Jogulamba Gadwal. 

Thunderstorm alert

Meanwhile a thunderstorm alert has been issued in isolated parts of Jagtial, Rajanna Sircilla, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Rangareddy, Hyderabad, and Medchal Malkajgiri, Adilabad, Kumaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanumakonda, Jangaon, Siddipet, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, and Suryapet districts.

For Hyderabad, generally cloudy sky was forecast over the next 24 hours, with light to moderate rain or thundershowers likely, accompanied by gusty winds. The maximum and minimum temperatures in the city are expected to hover around 34°C and 21°C, respectively.
