Malayalam actor Unni Mukundan on Saturday (June 14) revealed that plans of making a sequel to his blockbuster action film Marcohave been dropped.
On Saturday, Unni shared a video on his Instagram handle showing his physical transformation, under which a fan asked, “Marco 2kab ayegi?” (When will Marco 2 release?). “Bro, apologies but I have dropped plans to continue the Marco series. Too much negativity around the project. I’ll try my best to bring something bigger and better than Marco. Thanks for all the love and positivity. Cheers,” responded Unni.

The actor’s response left many fans disappointed, especially those who were awaiting a sequel after the tremendous success Marco had tasted at the box office.
The ‘negativity’ that Unni mentioned in his response might denote the controversies the film attracted for its portrayal of violence. Marco, directed by Haneef Adeni, is widely considered to be one of the most violent Malayalam films.

Post the theatrical release of the film, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) even denied satellite rights for the movie, citing its portrayal of extreme violence. There were also appeals to ban its OTT release, and the film was also the spotlight of debates in Kerala over the role of films in fuelling shocking acts of violence by young people in recent times.
Marco was a spin-off of Unni’s character in the director’s 2019 film, Mikhael, headlined by Nivin Pauly. The cast also featured Kabir Duhan Singh, Yukti Thareja, Anson Paul, Siddique, Arjun Nandakumar, Durva Thaker, and Abhimanyu Shammy Thilakan, among others.
With music scored by Ravi Basrur of KGF fame, the film had cinematography by Chandru Selvaraj and editing by Shameer Muhammed. Shareef Muhammed produced the film under the Cubes Entertainments banner, in association with Unni Mukundan Films.
