The Madhya Pradesh High Court on Thursday (March 27, 2025) gave its nod to the State Government after it assured that it could incinerate the remaining Union Carbide waste within 72 days at a private facility in Pithampur.
The nod from a Division Bench of Chief Justice Suresh Kumar Kait and Justice Vivek Jain came after the State authorities submitted an affidavit with the reports of incineration of the 30 tonnes of waste under the three trial runs conducted in the past one month.

Stating that the three trial runs were successful, the State authorities said that the remaining more than 300 tonnes of waste could be disposed of at a feed rate of 270 kg per hour under the supervision of the CPCB and the MPPCB and that the entire process could be completed in 72 days.
The three trial runs were conducted on February 28, March 4 and March 10 at different burning rates of 135 kg/hour, 180 kg/hour, and 270 kg/hour, respectively, with officials of various departments monitoring the process’s impact on the local environment in Pithampur.
Of the 350 tonne waste that was transported from the defunct Union Carbide factory in Bhopal to the Pithampur industrial area in Dhar district, 328 tonne toxic waste now remains to be disposed of.
