Minister for IT and HRD Nara Lokesh on Saturday (March 15) vowed to make Mangalagiri-Tadepalli Municipal Corporation (MTMC) garbage-free within a year and called upon the people to contribute to achieving the goal.
Participating as chief guest in a meeting organised at MTMC office in Mangalagiri as part of the Swarna Andhra-Swachha Andhra programme, Mr. Lokesh emphasised the need for everyone to properly manage the waste generated in their homes, i.e. by handing over the household waste to municipal vehicles coming to their doorsteps every day instead of dumping it in public places, vacant land or drains.
He pointed out that companies like SAEL and Divi’s Laboratories provided funds under Corporate Social Responsibility for taking the Clean Mangalagiri initiative forward. SAEL gave ₹1.25 crore for providing sanitation kits to ward secretariats while Divi’s funded the salaries to the ‘clean ambassadors’.
Mr. Lokesh, who is the local MLA, said plans were made to construct underground drainages, and a special drive would be conducted in the jurisdictions of all Secretariats for raising awareness about cleanliness and undertaking sanitation work.
Earlier, Mr. Lokesh inspected plastic-free stalls set up under the aegis of the Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA), and presented certificates of appreciation to students who excelled in drawing competitions.
He also unveiled a Clean Mangalagiri poster and brochure and administered the Clean Mangalagiri oath to officials, leaders and students.
