Princess of Wales: From Diana to Kate Middleton; Is the Princess of Wales title doomed? | – Times of India

It’s been roughly three decades since Princess Diana‘s untimely death, however, the life and time of the people’s princess continues to intrigue people even today. As the Prince and Princess of Wales, Charles and Diana’s troubled marriage was much talked about when the couple was married. And now, in a strange turn of events, there might be trouble in the paradise of the new Prince and Princess of Wales– Prince William and Kate Middleton‘s lives as well.
Diana and King Charles III (formerly known as Prince Charles) were married from 1981 to 1996, and theirs is one of the most talked about royal weddings till date. From Diana’s 25-foot wedding dress train to their wedding being one of the most expensive ones in the world– Diana and Charles’ fairytale wedding is etched in people’s memory. But their marriage couldn’t survive the test of time; and after 15 years and two kids together, the couple parted ways in 1996. A year later, Diana passed away in a tragic road accident. Prince Charles, on the other hand, moved on and married his long-time partner Camilla in 2005, and in 2022 Charles and Camilla became the King and Queen of the United Kingdom.
However, after Diana died in 1996, the royal title of Princess of Wales continued to be associated with her name for a very long time. When the then Prince of Wales, Charles, married Camilla, she became the Duchess of Cornwall; while Diana remained to be the Princess of Wales even after her death!
Years later, Diana’s elder son Prince William married his long-time girlfriend Kate Middleton on April 29, 2011, and they were given the royal titles of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. It was only after Queen Elizabeth II died in 2022, that Charles ascended to the throne and became King Charles III, and the heir to the throne Prince William and his wife Kate were given the titles– Prince and Princess of Wales, respectively.
But now, there are rumours of the new Prince and Princes of Wales’ marriage being in trouble– just like Diana and Charles’! The reason: Kate Middleton’s long absence from any public appearances for months, while Prince William is seen alone at events.
It was on December 25, 2023, when Kate Middleton made her last public appearance. On January 17, 2024, Kensington Palace announced that Kate underwent a planned abdominal surgery, so she would be off her royal duties for a few days to recover. However, it’s been months since then and now it is being said that she might resume her royal duties after Easter. Not just this, but more recently Kensington Palace posted a high-photoshopped picture of Kate with her three children for Mother’s Day, which is celebrated on March 10th every year in the UK. When people questioned the highly-edited picture on social media, and news agencies refused to carry it for being morphed– an official apology was issued in Kate’s name by Kensington Palace, which further made people suspicious of her disappearance. A few hours after taking the blame for the photoshopped image, Kate and Prince William were spotted heading out in a car– which seemed like an activity just to prove that things are fine between the royal couple. But sources revealed that Kate and Prince William seemed quite unhappy. A source even said that Kate ‘looked like sad Diana’, as per reports.

In 2019, there were rumours of Prince William allegedly being involved with Lady Sarah Rose Hanbury– this has gained more momentum lately with Kate’s suspicious withdrawal from public view. People have raised concerns about Kate and Prince William’s marriage and if things are no longer working-out for them.
If this is true, then the uncanny resemblance of Diana and Charles’ troubled marriage with Kate and Prince William’s relationship is hard to miss. And, this makes us wonder if the royal title of Princess of Wales is really doomed.
