King Charles waves to well-wishers in first public outing since cancer diagnosis

King Charles has been pictured smiling with the Queen by his side as he returned to London to continue his cancer treatment.

The King and Queen Camilla flew by helicopter to Buckingham Palace from their private Sandringham home, and were driven the short distance to nearby Clarence House.

Last week the monarch revealed the diagnosis to the public after treatment for a benign enlarged prostate led to the shock discovery.

The Monarch returned from a week in Sandringham, Norfolk to continue his treatment after a brief visit from his son Prince Harry at Clarence House on Tuesday who flew in from California.

On Saturday, the King spoke about his diagnosis for the first time as he thanked people for their “many messages of support and good wishes”. He added in his statement that it was “equally heartening” to hear how sharing his diagnosis has helped to promote public understanding of cancer.

The King was seen smiling and waving on Sunday as he made his first public outing since his cancer diagnosis.

Charles has postponed all public-facing duties, but is continuing with behind-the-scenes work on his red boxes of state papers.

Will the King abdicate?

The statement released by Buckingham Palace has given no indication that the King intends to step down. In fact, it suggests that he hopes to return to his duties in full in the future.

The last British monarch to leave the throne was Edward VIII, but that was for personal reasons when he decided to marry American actor and divorcee Wallis Simpson in 1936.

Charles’ mother, Queen Elizabeth II, did not abdicate despite health struggles towards the end of her life.

What has Charles been diagnosed with?

King Charles has been diagnosed with cancer. It is unclear what form of the disease he has, but it was discovered during unrelated treatment for an enlarged prostate.

A statement from Buckingham Palace read: “During the King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.”

Prince of Wales may step in to represent his father at events

The Prince of Wales may step in to represent his father at events and it has been reported William and his family are spending half-term at their Norfolk home Anmer Hall, which is on the King’s Sandringham estate.

It comes as the Prince is “still processing” the King’s shock cancer diagnosis, according to royal insiders.

His father shared the news of his cancer diagnosis with both Prince William and his brother, Prince Harry, before it was revealed to the public last Monday.

William is currently spending time with his family on a half-term holiday after he returned to his royal duties earlier this week for the first time since Kate’s abdominal surgery.

He is expected to take on more royal duties as his father is forced to postpone public engagements while undertaking cancer treatment.

“At times like this, it is a reminder that as well as being the future head of state, he is also a human being”, a royal source told The Times.

“He is processing the news of his father having cancer as a human being. Given the seriousness with which he takes his role, of course it is something he will be thinking about.”

More on the King’s return to the capital

The King has returned to London for what is widely expected to be further treatment following his cancer diagnosis.

Charles and Queen Camilla flew by helicopter to Buckingham Palace from their private Sandringham home, and were driven the short distance to nearby Clarence House.

It was announced last week that the head of state has a “form of cancer” and at the weekend he issued a statement praising “all those organisations which support cancer patients”.

Charles has postponed all public-facing duties, but is continuing with behind-the-scenes work on his red boxes of state papers.

The Queen has been carrying out her royal diary of engagements and last week said her husband was doing “extremely well under the circumstances”.

She said the King, who underwent his first bout of cancer treatment last week, had been “very touched” by all the messages of support he has received from the public.

Charles had been staying at his country residence following his first cancer treatment.

Men’s health concerns soar following King Charles’s diagnosis

Record numbers of men say they have looked into their own potential health issues since King Charles’s shock cancer news, according to new research commissioned in the days following the announcement.

Over a quarter, 28%, of men say their concerns about cancer have drastically risen since the bombshell announcement.

Almost one in two men, 49%, have confessed they are unsure of how to check their bodies to spot cancer signs and a staggering 3 in 10 ,30%, admit they do not regularly check their body for changes and abnormalities.

The research, which was conducted by private medical group Pall Mall Medical, revealed a further 19% confessed they have never checked their body for changes and abnormalities in their entire lives.

When it comes to routine prostate cancer screenings, a third of men aged over 55, 38%, admit to not being screened in over a year.

“Our data clearly indicates a notable shift in men’s attitudes towards their health since King Charles’s cancer news.” said Dr Mariyam Malik from Pall Mall Medical.

“This level of engagement and proactive research is unprecedented and highlights the powerful influence that high-profile health disclosures can have on public health consciousness.”
