HastKalaPramanak chip: IIT Delhi student designs chip to tackle the issue of counterfeit Banarasi sarees | – Times of India

The market for Banarasi sarees, a symbol of Indian craftsmanship, has been facing a significant challenge in recent years. With the rise of counterfeit products flooding the market, many buyers struggle to differentiate between genuine handwoven Banarasi sarees and machine-made imitations. However, a breakthrough solution has emerged, thanks to Kunal Maurya, a student from IIT Delhi and the founder of HKV Benaras Pvt Ltd. His innovative creation, the HastKalaPramanak chip, is set to transform the handloom industry and protect the authenticity of one of India’s most cherished textile traditions.

The HastKalaPramanak chip is a small yet powerful technological tool embedded within the fabric of Banarasi sarees. When scanned, the chip reveals crucial information about the saree’s authenticity and its weaving history. This digital traceability ensures that consumers can verify whether they are purchasing a genuine handwoven Banarasi saree or a counterfeit imitation. Kunal’s initiative comes at a time when Banarasi sarees are at risk of losing their global reputation due to the growing prevalence of fake products, often mass-produced by machines and passed off as authentic.
By introducing this chip, Kunal aims to restore trust in the Banarasi saree industry and protect both consumers and skilled artisans. The chip’s adoption can lead to a resurgence in demand for genuine, handmade Banarasi sarees, offering a much-needed boost to the livelihoods of artisans who rely on traditional handloom techniques. Furthermore, this initiative provides a much-needed solution to the growing counterfeit problem, ensuring that customers are not misled.

Recently, Kunal Maurya had the honour of presenting his innovative solution to the Hon’ble Governor of Uttar Pradesh, marking an important milestone in his journey. If widely adopted, HastKalaPramanak could revolutionize the handloom industry, benefiting artisans, consumers, and preserving the heritage of handmade Banarasi sarees for generations to come.
We love Kunal’s interesting initiative, tell us your thoughts about the same in the comment section below.
