Frog weddings are not a monolithic tradition; they vary fascinatingly from region to region. In Assam, the ritual is known as ‘Bhekuli Biya’, where the amphibian couple is dressed in traditional Assamese attire and the ceremony is performed with all the customary Assamese rituals. Moving to Uttar Pradesh, places like Sonebhadra, Gorakhpur, and Varanasi have their unique way of conducting these weddings, often involving the entire community in the festivities.
In the southern state of Karnataka, particularly in Udupi, the ritual takes on a more solemn tone, with prayers and offerings made to the deity of rain. Similarly, in West Bengal’s Nadia district, the ceremony is conducted with a deep sense of reverence, reflecting the local beliefs and customs.
Madhya Pradesh and Bihar also partake in this tradition, with Bhopal and Saharsa hosting their own versions of frog weddings. Each locale infuses the ceremony with its cultural essence, making it a unique experience that underscores the diversity of Indian traditions.
