Courts and a law college

The Madras High Court is set to inaugurate criminal courts and the offices attached thereto are in the very same premises where the Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College was situated earlier. The Law College has been shifted to far-flung places causing inconvenience and hardship to students, particularly girl students. There are immense advantages to having a law college near the High Court. That has been the practice in Mumbai too.

In this context, what is more relevant is that the Tamil Nadu government has not bothered to respect the directions issued in 2024 by the First Division Bench of then Chief Justice Sanjay Gangapurwala and Justice Bharatha Chakravarthy — that the Government Law College should be situated within the city and that the government should identify a suitable place for it. The powers that be have not made any efforts to ensure that the Law College is moved back to the city where it was run for over 100 years in the heritage building so that students can learn from the proceedings of the court.
