Rebuilding Gaza

Post-war reconstruction of Gaza is expected to generate a massive demand for manpower and materials, turning the region into one of the world’s largest rebuilding zones. As international aid and funds flow in to clear the debris and rebuild houses, hospitals and infrastructure, India stands to benefit immensely. Beyond construction, Indian health-care professionals, teachers and IT technicians may be sought after to revive essential services and digital systems. Indian construction firms and MSMEs dealing in cement, steel, tiles and solar solutions can also tap into supply contracts through global tenders. Moreover, India’s proven expertise in affordable housing, renewable energy and telemedicine can serve as vital tools for Gaza’s revival. With proactive diplomatic engagement and government facilitation, this crisis can become a blessing in disguise — enhancing India’s overseas employment, boosting remittances and projecting its soft power as a nation contributing to global humanitarian reconstruction.

Though the present declaration is a welcome step to ensure peace in the region, rebuilding war-torn Gaza from the debris of mass destruction is a very challenging task. It is a sine qua non that reconstruction work needs to be taken up on a war footing.

West Indies in India

West Indian cricket lost its hegemony several decades ago. With the retirement of fearsome fast bowlers and explosive batsmen, its cricket touched a nadir and never recovered from it. As of now, it is not a force to reckon with. The clean sweep by India was only expected and, hence, this series does not mean much. The Indian cricket team’s strength will have to be assessed against a stronger opposition, preferably in overseas conditions. But, this series served as an opportunity for youngsters such as Sai Sudharsan and Dhruv Jurel to stake a claim for a place in the playing eleven of the future (‘Sport page’, October 14).
